From 2002 to 2005, the Ove Arup Foundation supported the ‘Culture Castles’ initiative developed by the Foundation for Art & Creative Technology (FACT).
The initiative was developed and managed through FACT’s Collaboration Programme, which works with community and education groups on Merseyside to develop creative projects that reflect their experience. Culture Castles participants explored the built environment through creative technologies, investigating change in the urban fabric.
They were then joined by a group of primary school children and tenants from Liverpool Housing Action Trust, who worked with artists, architects and construction professionals on a series of collaborative investigations. The Ove Arup Foundation grant, which totalled £15,000, enabled participants to work collaboratively with these creative professionals.
Project leaders were invited to write proposals in response to the group they worked with. Groups produced public installations in the city centre, experimental play houses, digital animation and film.
Founded in 1988, FACT is the UK’s leading agency for commissioning and presenting film, video and new media art, and has instigated over 100 digital media artworks with local artists. The FACT Centre in Liverpool houses three cinemas and two galleries, as well as on-line R&D and training facilities.
